About the role
The work
Shippers and receivers run the dock. Inbound, that means checking trailers against purchase orders and bills of lading, counting, inspecting for damage, receiving into the warehouse management system and putting product away or staging it. Outbound, it means picking or staging orders, building and wrapping pallets, generating labels and paperwork, and loading trailers to a schedule.
The role sits between the warehouse floor and the office. You need to be comfortable with a scanner and a WMS screen as well as a pallet jack, and usually a forklift. Accuracy matters more than speed: a receiving error becomes an inventory problem that someone else has to find.
Shipper/receiver roles are often the first step toward lead, inventory-control and logistics-coordinator positions. We place them on temporary, temp-to-perm and permanent terms across the GTA.
Pay
Typical pay in the GTA
Typical range across our GTA shipper/receiver placements. Pay is set by each employer and varies with forklift use, systems and shift.
$19 to $25 an hour
- Forklift certification and WMS experience pay at the top of the range
- Afternoon and night docks usually carry a $1 to $2 premium
- Sites shipping dangerous goods pay more and require TDG certification
- Weekly direct deposit, vacation and statutory-holiday pay on every assignment
Requirements
What you need to start
Warehouse experience
Usually one year or more, with exposure to receiving or shipping paperwork and a scanner.
Forklift certification
Required at most sites, counterbalance at minimum. Docks are forklift environments.
Systems comfort
RF scanners and a WMS or ERP (SAP, Oracle, Manhattan and others). Basic computer skills for labels, BOLs and email.
Attention to detail
Counting, matching documents and catching damage before it is signed for.
Useful, not required
TDG (Transportation of Dangerous Goods) certification, cross-border paperwork experience, carrier scheduling.
A typical shift
What a shipping and receiving shift looks like
A receiving shift starts with the inbound schedule: which trailers are due, what is on them and where it goes. As trailers arrive you check seals, unload or supervise unloading, count against the PO, inspect for damage, receive into the WMS and label for put-away. Discrepancies are documented and reported, not guessed at.
A shipping shift works the other direction: orders drop from the WMS, pallets are picked or staged, checked, wrapped and labelled, paperwork is printed, carriers are checked in, and trailers are loaded in sequence for their departure times. At the end of the shift the dock is reconciled and handed over.
Most docks run days and afternoons, with nights at high-volume distribution centres. Expect a mix of forklift time, scanner time and computer time, and a lot of walking.

Frequently asked
Do I need forklift certification to be a shipper/receiver?
At most sites, yes. A few smaller operations use pallet jacks only, but forklift certification opens up the majority of shipper/receiver roles and pays more.
What systems should I know?
Any WMS or ERP experience helps. SAP, Oracle, Manhattan and HighJump are common in the GTA. If you know one, you can learn another; tell us what you have used.
Is this a good route to a lead or office role?
It is the most common one. Shippers and receivers who are accurate and reliable are the first people promoted to inventory control, team lead and logistics-coordinator roles.
Are shipper/receiver jobs temporary or permanent?
Both. Many start as temp-to-perm, with the employer taking you on after a set number of hours. Permanent roles are also filled directly.
